Liz Woolley “LIVE!” for $2.99 [Digital download only]
This is a recording of a live concert in September, 2012. It features Liz performing all her own songs. Singing, playing piano, and accompanied by alto saxophone, bass, and drums. This is the group Liz regularly gigged with while living in Logan, Utah, and the only live recording they ever made.
And one more thing - they are all outstanding.
The working title of this album was “Ten Reasons to Fall in Love with Liz”. These are all wonderful songs, swingingly and enchantingly performed with top rank players. And what’s not to love? For example, after the initial alto and piano solos on How Can You Say You Don’t Love Me (No. 7.), listen to this group interact and trade solos. These musicians have played together a lot and it shows; you won’t hear any better. On bass, groove master Jim Schaub keeps this group cooking throughout the entire session, and on this one his partner in rhythm, drummer Sam Bryson, jumps into the ‘conversation’ as they trade fours on this smokin’ little tune.
What else will you hear? Besides her fabulous singing, brilliant song writing and delightful scatting, what this recording best demonstrates is Liz’s jazz piano chops. This girl can play. And on a Thursday night in my living room, surrounded by her friends, family, and other musicians, Liz Woolley had it goin’ on.
One final comment about What to Do (No. 10).
After the concert, with only 2 or 3 of us left, I asked Liz for one more - just her and her piano. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but . . . wow.
Download it. Enjoy it. Be the first on your block. Tell your friends.
Spread the word. Get it out there.
This lady swings.
